Tissue contents and intracellular distribution of selenium and iodine in human tissues studied by neutron activation analysis

英文摘要 | Selenium and iodine are two essential elements in living systems. In this paper, the tissue contents and subcellular distributions of selenium and iodine in human liver, kidney and heart samples were studied by neutron activation analysis (NAA). Certified reference materials were used as analytical quality control. Selenium was highly enriched in human kidney, followed by liver and then heart. In contrast, iodine was only enriched in liver. Different subcellular distribution patterns were also found in different tissues. In addition, selenium was mainly enriched in mitochondria and nuclei, whereas the lowest concentration of iodine was in the soluble fractions of cells. About 45-70% of total Se and I were in the nuclear fractions. The present data can reflect the long-term accumulation of selenium and iodine in human body. Our study also provides the reference data of selenium and iodine in human important tissues and the corresponding subcellular fractions. |
