Surface state at the (K)over-bar point of the surface brillouin zone on Cu{111}

英文摘要The electronic structure of a Cu{111} surface along the (K) over bar-Gamma line of the surface Brillouin zone (SBZ) is studied with synchrotron-radiation angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experiments reveal the presence of an electron state about 3 eV below the Fermi level near the (K) over bar point of the SBZ. This state has all the conventional attributes of a surface state, namely, (1) its binding energy is independent of the perpendicular photoelectron momentum; (2) its energy-dispersion curve lies in an absolute gap of the projected bulk band structure near the (K) over bar point; and (3) its emission intensity is sensitive to foreign atoms (cobalt, in the present experiments). Hence, this state is interpreted in terms of a localized d-electron Tamm-type surface state. However, its intensity and its energy position are hardly affected by the adsorption of 3500 L, [1 L = 1 x 10(-6) Torr sec] of oxygen. This unconventional behavior was compared to that of the sp-electron Shockley surface state at the Gamma point (binding energy 0.4 eV below the Fermi level), which exhibits the opposite effect with regard to the adsorption of cobalt or oxygen. A tentative explanation of this interesting phenomenon is presented.
