Rewritable hydrogel coatings using water as the ink

英文摘要We propose a novel, facile, low-cost and friendly method to prepare rewritable surface coatings from nanoparticles buried in gelatin-alginate hydrogel layer using water as ink. Firstly, polystyrene-co-acrylic acid (PS-co-AA) nanoparticles mixed with gelatin were patterned on substrates of microscope slides, plastic slips or black papers, which can self-destruct while sprayed water on it. And the transmitance altered from nearly transparent to opaque in the patterned regions even if the water evaporated reflecting the transporting of PS particles from gelatin network to its surface due to Brownian motion while gelatin swollen by water, and shrinked as water evaporated. Secondly, once composite gelatin-alginate hydrogel layer with thickness of ≥1 μm coated onto the former pattern, the pattern can be visible by writing with water, then erased as water evaporated, and can be repeated multiple times, resulting from the PS particles were restricted under the hydrogel layer. When the PS particles are functionalized, our patterned films can be act as multiple-use sensors. The patterning method can be extended to other types of particles whose transporting is controlled by different chemical “stimuli”.
