Micro-expressions are extremely quick facial expressions that are often embedded in a flow of emotional expressions. Recognition of micro-expression is influenced by the emotional context appearing before and after the micro-expression. Additionally, the effect of emotional context is also modulated by the duration of micro-expression. However, it remains unclear whether the effect of emotional context is related to the presentation duration of context. Using synthesized micro-expressions modified from METT (Micro-Expression Training Tool), we observed that the effect of emotional context was not modulated by context presentation duration of supra-seconds (1000 ms) and sub-seconds (600 ms). Furthermore, an effect of emotional context which was similar to repetition blindness effect was observed on micro-expression recognition. Micro-expressions were more difficult to recognize when the target was relatively similar to the context expression, providing further insights into micro-expression recognition.
