Comparison of global N-MORB and E-MORB classification schemes

英文摘要 | The mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) can be generally divided into N-MORB and E-MORB, which have attracted much attention due to their different geodynamics significance. N-MORB and E-MORB are distinguishable from each other based on various classification criteria. The Rb/Nd <= 0.15, K/Ti <= 0.11, (La/Sm)(N) <= 0.8, K2O/TiO2 < 0.09, Delta Nb = 1.74 + lg(Nb/Y)-1.921g (Zr/Y) < 0, (La/Sm)(N) < 1 and 100K(2)O/TiO2 <= 13 of MORB are commonly classified as N-MORB, otherwise E-MORB. So far, less discussion on the applicability of the classification criteria on most MORBs has been conducted. In order to solve this problem, we adopt the data from the global spreading center to compare these seven criteria, and find that the (La/Sm)(N) < 1 is more suitable for identifying the most of the N-MORB. Therefore, 31 elements including La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Ba, Cs, Hf, K, Nb, Pb, Rb, Sc, Sr, Ta, Th, Ti, Tl, U, V, Y and Zr of all samples are selected to make 36856 element pairs. The logarithmic ratios of every two elements are used to make a plot and then the confidence elliptic overlap rate of 85% is calculated. According to the principle of minimum overlap rate, it is better to use the correlation of the rare earth elements La, Ce, Pr and Sm, and other high field elements Nb, Zr, Hf and Y to discriminate the N-MORB and E-MORB. Among these elements, the best discrimination is obtained if La as numerator or La/Elf and La/Zr ratios is applied. Therefore, the correlation between the above elements offer a better solution for discriminating N-MORB and E-MORB. |
