; Based on the real objects of Chinese and foreign material exchange (historical remains and relics) found along the Maritime Silk Road, by methods of textual criticism of historical materials, archaeological typology and scientific analysis, and applying the Chinese and foreign research results of archaeology, history and scientific archaeology at home and abroad, the inter-communion relations of goods, commerce and technics on the Maritime Silk Road (500 BC-500 AD) are discussed on the framework of the exchange history of the Maritime Silk Road. Centring on the ancient glass, gemstones, gold and silver, pottery artifacts and other decorative or functional objects unearthed along the Maritime Silk Road from the Han Dynasty (202 BC-AD 263) to the Jin Dynasty(AD 265-420), this thesis reveals the scientific and technological, historical and cultural information of cultural relic, and elaborates and summarizes the process of the historical evolution of the Maritime Silk Road, the distribution time and space, the characteristics of the times, and the cultural, technical and economic relations. Glass, garnet, beryl, quartz and other small decorations have the specific space- time distribution pattern and exchange process that reflect the economic model and social division of labor in the inter regions of the Maritime Silk Road, and are closely related to the historical geography, ethnic migration and social transformation in this period. Through the exploration of the material exchange data of China and foreign countries, this thesis has further revealed the social and economic structure of the east and west coast of India and Southeast Asia in the eastern section of the Maritime Silk Road. The Maritime Silk Road is not only an archaeological concept, but also a history of social and economic exchanges between China and the World. In this region, ethnic, religious, cultural and social structural changes are closely linked. In the Han Dynasty, Hepu county was the starting point of the eastern part of the Maritime Silk Road, and also the distribution center for business travelers and goods. The garnet bead artifacts unearthed from Hepu should be imported from Arikamedu and its surrounding areas in India, according to the chemical composition, grinding process, drilling process and shape. The beryl gemstone artifacts unearthed from Hepu further reflect the relationship between Hepu and the southern part of the ancient India. It is also a good evidence for the interaction and symbiosis of the culture circle between the bay of Bengal and the South China Sea. The bead ornament made of quartz family mineral unearthed from Hepu has a large number of quantities and shapes, which explicates the extensive trade for Hepu port. This study has systematically sort out the previous researches at home and abroad, especially on glass, stone and other artifacts unearthed along the Maritime Silk Road. Secondly, one batch of small ornaments made of garnet, beryl and quartz, are studied systematically by the methods of scientific and technological means such as X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, Laser Raman spectroscopy and stereo-microscopy and archaeology, which made a clear understanding of the raw material, shape characteristics, manufacturing process and sources of them. Thirdly, the relevant historical materials and literature are reanalyzed. Based on the analysis of science and technology of the unearthed artifacts, the economic, cultural and technical exchanges of the Maritime Silk Road were researched, the linking routes between the inland Silk Road and the Maritime Silk Road, and the historical significance of research on the Maritime Silk Road for Sino-foreign exchange were also discussed comprehensively. |
