Effect of sodium chloride solution on adsorbed water content of clays

英文摘要In this paper the influence of NaCl solutions on the adsorbed water content and hydraulic conductivity of clays has been investigated. The adsorbed water content of two kinds of natural clays treated with NaCl solutions at various concentrations is measured using the NMR technique. It is shown that the adsorbed water content decreases with the increment of NaCl concentration. Furthermore, comparison of hydraulic conductivity for different NaCl solutions shows that the hydraulic conductivity increases with increasing NaCl concentration. A quantitative explanation for the changes that occur in the adsorbed water content and hydraulic conductivity of these clays as a result of NaCl solutions treatment is provided. This explanation relates the changes in adsorbed water content to changes in the diffuse double layer thickness. It is suggested that NaCl solutions affect the behavior of adsorbed water in clays and, through that, many other clay properties.
