THE REPAIR EFFECTS OF KAPPA-SELENOCARRAGEENAN ON SMOKERS WITH PHYSIOLOGICAL DAMAGE

| 英文摘要 | Epidemiological evidence suggests that smoking is a major cause of human lung cancer. Laboratory experiments show that the mini-nucleus freqencies are obviously higher in smokers than in non-smokers, which means that there is much chromosome distortion in smokers. Selenium is a strong antioxidant which has the ability to clear up free radical produced in the body and is able to protect the struture and function of protein, DNA and chromosome against the injury of free radical. Many studies have shown that kappa-selenocarrageenan has lower toxicity and a significantly higher biological availability. On the bases of the results, a supplementation trial was conducted in which 19 smokers (at the age of 39-59, history of smoking is 15-30 years, smoking 6-20 cigarettes per day) were taking 100ug of selenium per day in form of kappa-selenocarrageenan water preparation for 3 months. The mini-nucleus, double strand DNA and the whole blood selenium levels were changed remarkably. The mini-nucleus freqency is 1.26+/-1.04 parts per thousand before intake of kappa-selenocarrageenan and 0.52+/-0.70% after intake of kappa-selenocarrageenan, p<0.01. The double strand DNA content changed from 7.76+/-2.59% to 10.5+/-2.19%, p<0.01; and the whole blood selenium levels increased from 76.4+/-15/1ppb to 148.3+/-44.1ppb p<0.01. No toxic or side effect was reported. The results show that kappa-selenocarrageenan has the repair-effects on the physiological damage to smokers. |
