Production of Cantonese Tones using an Ingressive Airflow

英文摘要Acoustically, lexical tones differ in fundamental frequency (F0), duration, and intensity. To date, tones associated with words that are produced using an ingressive airflow are not known. The study investigated lexical tones produced using ingressive phonation. Acoustic (F0) and perceptual listeners’ identification of lexical tones characteristics of Cantonese were examined. The syllable /ji produced using the six Cantonese tones yielding six distinctive Chinese words by native Cantonese speakers using (1) normal egressive phonation (EP), and (2) ingressive phonation (IP) were studied. F0 values of the vowel /i/ were obtained using praat. Meanwhile, the tones were perceived by ten naïve listeners of Cantonese. Similar F0 pattern for rising tones produced using EP and IP was found. Yet, the F0 contours for falling tones between different modes of phonation were observed. Meanwhile, Cantonese tones produced using EP were identified with higher accuracy than those using IP. For perceiving IP tones, greater accuracy was found for rising contours
