英文摘要Hedgehogs in the genus Mesechinus (FamilyErinaceidae), which include two currently recognizedspecies (M. dauuricus and M. hughi), are distributedfrom northeast Mongolia to the upper Amur Basin inRussia and adjacent areas in northeast and northernChina. In recent years, a population of Mesechinushedgehogs was discovered from Mt. Gaoligong, southwestern Yunnan, China, far from the knowndistribution range of the genus. Furthermore, thesehedgehogs are the only known population to bedistributed at elevations higher than 2 100 m and insympatry with gymnures. To evaluate the taxonomicstatus of these hedgehogs, we examined specimensrepresenting Mesechinus taxa in China and furtherconducted morphometric and karyotypic analyses. Our results supported the existence of four speciesin China. Specifically, we identified the hedgehogsfrom Mt. Gaoligong as a new species, Mesechinuswangi sp. nov. , and recognized M. miodon, previouslyconsidered as a synonym of either M. dauuricus or M.hughi, as a distinct species. Interestingly, we observeda supernumerary M 4 on all specimens of Mesechinuswangi sp. nov. , which is an extremely rare event inthe evolution of mammalian dentition.
