英文摘要Using a monolayer of stearic acid molecules as a buffer layer, nitrobenzene has been immobilized on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and imaged by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) with submolecular resolution. The results indicate that the image contrast is determined by the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) whether a positive or negative bias is applied. This strategy can be used as a general method to characterize small organic molecules by STM under ambient conditions. Copyright (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
