英文摘要Aiming at a detailed study of morphology and size of heavy-ion tracks in solids, highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) was irradiated with argon ions in a wide range of energy. Low fluences (less than or equal to 3x10(12) ions/cm(2)) were used to enable characterization of single ion impacts on surfaces. The latent ion tracks were investigated with the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The average track diameter was determined by experimental observation. It was shown that the track diameters increase with increasing electronic energy loss. For the creation of latent tracks, the ion velocity is one of the important parameters. The origin of these features on the surface is discussed. The relation between the size of the tracks and the energy deposition of incident ions was examined. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
