Determination of Bragg peak location for heavy charged particles with CR-39 solid track detectors

英文摘要The Bragg peak location for 239Pu α-particles(5.15MeV) passing through an air gap of 3 or 4 cm and a collimater of φ 1mm aperture was determined by using a CR-39 solid track detector according to the distribution rule of radiation damage density along charged particle tracks. In experiment a CR-39 solid track detector of SY type with thickness of 249-265 μm and a radiation source of 239Pu with energy of 5.15MeV were used. Passing through the air gap of 3 cm, the energy of α particles decreases to about 1.2 MeV and the Bragg peaks in CR-39 are located at about 7μm, and the calculated value under the same conditions is 6.14μm. The good agreement between experimental and computational values is important for the research of radiation biology and nuclear medicine.
