Fractal patterns of precipitates observed in boar bile

中文摘要 | Two-stage precipitation, crystalline growth and fractal growth, were found in boar bile. The precipitates were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The precipitates were of different morphologies and sizes, and could be divided into three groups: the crystal with regular shape, the tree-like fractal aggregate, and ramified tiny aggregate. The crystals accumulated together, and several branch-like structures grew out at the advancing front of the crystal accumulation. The dimension of the fractal aggregate was D = 1.69. The ramified tiny aggregate consisted of numerous clusters that contained many nano-grains with a size in the range of 40-120 rim. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was employed to measure chemical composition of the precipitates and the boar bile matrix. Computer simulation was performed and a precipitation-aggregation-branching (PAB) model was suggested to explain growth mechanism of the fractal aggregate. The experimental results reveal that equilibrium growth and non-equilibrium growth could occur successfully in the boar bile during liquid-solid phase transition. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.
