THE NATURE OF MARTENSITIC MORPHOLOGIES IN MEDIUM AND HIGH-CARBON STEELS

中文摘要This paper studies the effect of austenitizing temperature on quenched microstructure of medium and high carbon steels. It is found that the fibrous microstructure in medium and high carbon steels quenched from high temperature is not lath martensite but extra-fine martensitic plates, big and small, essentially parallel to each other. Previous reports that the volume fraction of lath martensite is about 75 to 90 % in medium carbon steel quenched from high temperature perhaps needs reassessment. Moreover, the parallel and equilateral triangular morphologies displayed in medium and high carbon steels illustrate that this morphology is not a unique characteristic of lath martensite but a common property of all coherent transformation products. Criteria that only lath martensite has a parallel and equilateral triangular or hexagonal surface relief, and that martensite with internal twins observed in the transmission electron microscope is platelike martensite, while if without internal twins it must be lath martensite, appear rather vague.
