Carbon nanotube confined iron nitride particles for syngas conversion

中文摘要conversion of natural gas, cola and biomass to clean transportable fuels and chemicals via syngas has been attracting more attention in recent years.1 it was reported as early as in the 1950s that iron nitride exhibited higher activity and longer life in fischer-tropsch synthesis than conventional iron catalysts. furthermore, the products contained shorter chain lengths and significantly more alcohols.2 our previous study showed that confinement inside the carbon nanotube (cnt) channels improved the reducibility of iron oxide, which favored the formation of iron carbides under the fts reaction conditions. thus, its catalytic activity was improved.3 similarly, confinement of a bimetallic rh-mn catalyst in cnt channels also led to an improved activity for catalyzing syngas conversion to c2 oxygenates compared to that located on the more accessible exterior surfaces of cnts.4 here we introduced iron nitride nanoparticles inside the cnt channels and studied the confinement effects on fts. methods: the cnt-confined iron oxide was subjected to a treatment process based on a temperature programmed reaction (tpre) in ammonia. the catalysts were characterized by x-ray diffraction (xrd), fe mössbauer spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (tem). the loading of these catalysts was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (icp-aes). the reaction was carried out under 5bar and 300°c with 15000h-1 of syngas (co:h2=1:1) ghsv. results and discussions: characterization results indicated that iron nitride, which was mainly composed of ζ-fe2n, γ’’-fen and γ’’’-fen phases had been prepared. the reaction results showed that the iron nitride catalyst was much more active than iron catalyst in fts. furthermore, the activity of the cnt-confined iron nitride was higher than the outside iron nitride catalyst although the nitridation of the outside iron catalyst was achieved at a lower temperature, which was likely related to a higher n2 dissociation activity. 5
