EFFECT OF CARBON POLLUTION ON LAKE EUTROPHICATION IN DIANCHI BASIN, CHINA

中文摘要 | On the basis of data monitored from April 2003 to April 2006, systematic research was carried out on the fields along the rivers and the reservoirs in the upper reaches to the entire water system in Lake Dianchi. The background levels of organic carbon (BOD5, CODMn) and inorganic carbon (HCO3, CO32-), as well as the conversion of carbon pollution to water pollution, were studied. The influence of these factors on lake eutrophication was also investigated. The three-year statistical data showed that the levels of carbon in different forms and their correlated chemical elements in the rivers and reservoirs in the upper reaches of the basin are close to the background values of natural water, except for the CODMn index. Thus, these rivers and reservoirs serve as references for measuring the pollution levels in Lake Dianchi. The input rivers, to which municipal sewage is discharged, are the main BOD5 and CODMn sources. The concentration and volume of pollutants discharged from Kunming River into the lake are considerably higher than those discharged from rural rivers. Among the values determined in the 36 related monitoring projects for Lake Dianchi, BOD5 and CODMn had the most significant correlation with chlorophyll a (Chl-a), and an extremely significant correlation between CO32- and Chl-a was observed. Additionally, CODMn characterized organic C and Chl-a. These results indicate that carbon pollution is an important cause of the eutrophication of Lake Dianchi. |
