英文摘要PURPOSE:To change an optical output quickly in accordance with mode switching by arranging a means for obtaining the optical output corresponding to the mode on the outside of an APC loop. CONSTITUTION:In an optical recording and reproducing device such as an optical disk provided with an APC circuit (automatic power control circuit), current flowing into a laser diode is controlled independently of a recording or reproducing mode. Namely, the current i0 is controlled by sampling executed by a comparator 5 in the APC loop in a comparatively long period in accordance with temperature change and the capacity of the current i0 is immediately changed by mode selecting signals SR, SW, SE to obtain a prescribed optical output. Since the means for changing the current i0 in accordance with the change of the mode is formed in a circuit different from the APC loop, the change of the current i0 can be responded to the change of the mode at a high speed and also can be moderately responded to the temperature change.
