英文摘要PURPOSE:To form a traveling wave type cascade optical amplifier characterized by high gain and easy temperature control, by forming a series of active-layer stripes, which are connected in cascade, on a single semiconductor substrate. CONSTITUTION:Parallel active-layer stripes 201-210 are arranged at an interval of about 10mum. An inputted light signal is sent into the preamplifier active-layer stripe 202 through an optical filter 301 as required. The amplified output is inputted to the active-layer stripes 204 and 206, which are connected in cascade. Optical filters 302, 304 and 306 are arranged in correspondence with the outputs of the active-layer stripes 202, 204 and 206. A control circuit receives the output of the active-layer stripe 201 and outputs control signals, which control gains, to the active-layer stripes 204 and 206. Thus the automatic gain control (AGC) optical amplifier is constituted.
