英文摘要PURPOSE:To control a difference in refractive index produced by the layer for maintaining refractive index in the horizontal direction of an optical waveguide element having a laminated structure with high accuracy by forming the layer by burying another material in the laminated structure. CONSTITUTION:An active layer 4 is formed as the first layer having a refractive index which is different from those of adjacent layers and a guide layer 6 is formed as the second layer which sets an effective distribution of refractive indexes in a layered structure including the layer 4 and defines a light propagating path in the layered structure. The layer 6 is the one which sets an effective distribution of refractive indexes in the layered structure including the layer 4, defines a light propagating path, namely, an optical waveguide section 44, and has such a shape that the part along the section 44 is cut off, namely, the part corresponding to the periphery of the section is removed. A block and glad layers 5 and 7 are respectively made of materials having the same refractive index and enclose the guide layer 6. A refractive index which is higher than that of the layer 6 is selected for the refractive index of the layers 5 and 7.
