英文摘要PURPOSE:To make emitted light from a semiconductor laser couple with an optical waveguide at a high efficiency and stably by a method wherein the laser is placed on a conductor waveguide via a dielectric block and the laser is optically coupled with the optical waveguide by a modulation grating. CONSTITUTION:A two-dimensional waveguide 4 is provided on an optical path between a three-dimensional waveguide 6 and a semiconductor laser 1 and the laser 1 is placed on this waveguide 4 via a dielectric block 2 and the waveguide 4 is provided with a modulation grating 11 to lead emitted light from the laser to the waveguide 6. Moreover, a waveguide lens 5 is provided on the waveguide 4 between the grating 11 and the waveguide 6 and the waveguide 4 and 6 are formed on the same LiNbO3 film. Parallel lights from the grating 11 are condensed on the waveguide 6 by the lens 5 and diffused lights from the waveguide 6 are paralleled and are coupled with the grating 1 The grating 11 is formed in such a way that light incident from the laser 1 is turned into parallel light on the waveguide 4.
