英文摘要PURPOSE:To tune a selected wavelength over a wide wavelength range by coupling a distribution feedback area whose refractive index is varied with an applied voltage optically with a light gain area whose light gain is controlled with an injected current quantity. CONSTITUTION:The distribution feedback area 11 whose refractive index is controlled with the applied voltage is coupled optically with the light gain area 12 whose light gain is controlled with the injected current quantity. Therefore, the refractive index of the distribution feedback area 11 is controlled with the applied voltage and the selected wavelength is also controlled correspondingly, so that variation in the light absorption quantity in the distribution feedback area 11 is compensated by the light gain area 12 which is coupled optically. Further, when an unnecessary current preventing means is provided, no current flows to the distribution feedback area 11, no heat is generated, and the tuning of the selected wavelength is controlled with only the applied voltage. Consequently, the selected wavelength is stabilized.
