英文摘要Provided is a structure of a heat-assisted magnetic recording head support mechanism that allows common inexpensive TE-mode LDs to be utilized. The heat-assisted magnetic recording head support mechanism comprises: a light source unit having a light-emitting element mounted on a cuboid sub mount; a heat-assisted magnetic recording head comprising a magnetic recording element, a reproducing element, a near-field optical element, and a waveguide for introducing light from the light-emitting element into the near-field optical element; a slider that includes the heat-assisted magnetic recording head and which floats above a disk; and a suspension for supporting the slider. The light source unit is an edge-emitting LD and is positioned on the side opposite the floating surface of the slider such that the light-emitting surface of the light-emitting element faces the slider, an aperture is created on the suspension, and the slider is connected to the suspension in such a manner that a part of the light source unit passes through the aperture of the suspension.
