英文摘要PURPOSE:To make a device small in size and simple and to eliminate the influence of the intensity variation of a light source by providing an optical isolator and converting a mode change into intensity variation through a multi-mode fiber, etc. CONSTITUTION:Light 19 emitted by a semiconductor laser element 1 is made incident on the optical isolator 2. The incident light is coupled with the multi- mode fiber 3 and propagated in the optical fiber in multimode and modes of high order are removed by a mode scrambler 4 to select several basic modes. Then, branch output of an optical branching device 5 is detected by a photodetector 6. If the wavelength of the semiconductor laser 1 varies, a propagation mode excited in the multi-mode fiber 3 changes, the branching ratio of the optical branching device 5 varies, and the light intensity detected by photodetectors 6 and 11 varies. Further, a comparator 12 calculates the ratio of the two outputs to remove the intensity variation of the light source, so that only the mode change is detected.
