英文摘要PURPOSE:To perform optical axis adjustment with high accuracy even by use of the outer face of a package as a reference, by providing a reference face which is formed at the outer face of the package on the basis of the optical axis of an optical element. CONSTITUTION:The circumferential face of the periphery of a cap 4 which is used as a reference face 14 forms itself into a circle which is centered by an optical axis 15 of a laser beam 10 emitted by a laser diode chip 9 and it is formed after a cutting work which is performed on the basis of detection of the optical axis 15. As to alignment accuracy between the reference face 14 and the optical axis 15, it is at least within + or -10mum. It is due to the fact that the fitting accuracy of a receptacle 16 for guiding an optical fiber towards a ring-type coupler 17 is required to be, for example, less than + or -10mum. In the case of this semiconductor laser device 1, if its cap part 4 is fitted into the coupler 17 of the receptacle 16, optical coupling is performed automatically with desired accuracy.
