英文摘要PURPOSE:To provide an optical amplifier itself with directivity and to obtain an economical relay by providing a branch in the direction opposite to the light traveling direction of an optical waveguide or forming a wedgelike optical waveguide which has sudden level difference width in the light traveling direction. CONSTITUTION:Branch optical waveguides 3-5 form an Y shape; light traveling from the optical waveguide 3 enters the optical waveguide 4 almost without any loss and light from the optical waveguide 5 enters the optical waveguide 3 while reduced nearly to half at a branch point A when the optical waveguides 3 and 4 have nearly the same optical waveguiding functions. When Y-shaped branches are cascased in three stages, incident light from a light incidence terminal 6 is coupled with an optical waveguide 8 and amplified. Light from a light projection terminal 7, on the other hand, attenuates before reaching the light incidence terminal 6 because of the loss due to the Y branches. Consequently, the optical amplifier itself has directivity and provides economical relay.
