英文摘要PURPOSE:To improve a semiconductor ring laser in light extraction efficiency by a method wherein light oscillating in a ring type waveguide is reflected by a high reflective film, and the reflected light is fed back again to the ring type waveguide, which is taken out through a half mirror. CONSTITUTION:A part of light circulating clockwise in a ring waveguide 12 propagates through an output waveguide 17 and reflected by a high reflective film 19, and a part of the reflected light is fed back as light circulating counterclockwise. By this constitution, light oscillating in the waveguide 12 is limited to light which is large in feedback volume and circulates counterclockwise and a light standing wave is not generated, so that the spatial hole burning of gain never occurs. In result, a longitudinal mode oscillation is restrained and a ring laser of this design oscillates in a single mode, so that it can be made to operate as a light source of high purity. By this setup, a large output can be taken out from an output waveguide 16.
