英文摘要PURPOSE:To decrease substantially the reflectivity at the end face of a waveguide by determining the refractive index of an antireflection film at 01-06 times the square root of the equiv. refractive index of the optical waveguide and the product of said refractive index and film thickness at 0.25-0.28 times the wavelength used. CONSTITUTION:The optical waveguide layer 13 is sandwiched by clad layers 11, 12 and the antireflection film 14 consisting of an SiOw film is formed at the end face of the layer 13. The refractive index of the film 14 is determined at the value in the range of 01-06 times the square root of the equiv. refractive index of the layer 13 and the product of the refractive index and film thickness is so determined as to attain the value in the range of 0.25-0.28 times the wavelength of the light to be used. Then the reflectivity at the end face of the optical waveguide is made substantially small by which the improvement in the coupling efficiency of light between the individual parts is made possible.
