英文摘要PURPOSE:To minimize the energy loss of the title optical system so as to form a clear spot by providing laser beam which oscillates in a multiplex lateral mode and optical path changing optical system which changes the laser beam emitting direction in accordance with the incident direction of the laser beam. CONSTITUTION:A polarization beam splitter 32 transmits P-polarized light which vibrates in parallel with the plane of incidence (parallel to the plane of the figure) and reflects S-polarized light which vibrates perpendicularly to the plane of incidence. Therefore, a semiconductor laser 14 and beam splitter 32 are arranged in such a way that the laser beam emitted from the laser 14 can become the P-polarized light against the beam splitter 32. The laser beam 14 oscillates in a multiplex lateral mode, but an image from which the multiplex lateral mode is separated is formed on a phase compensating element by means of a lens and spectroscope element. The phase compensating element reflects the laser beam in the same direction as the direction of incidence by compensating the separated phase of the lateral mode and the reflected laser beam becomes a gauss beam having a gauss distribution after passing through the spectroscope element and lens.
