英文摘要PURPOSE:To enable optical coupling requiring information in the direction of polarization easily by displaying the position of a semiconductor laser element and the direction of the joint surface of an active layer to the outside of a package into which the semiconductor laser element is introduced. CONSTITUTION:A semiconductor laser element 1 is mounted to a sub-mount 2, and the sub-mount 2 is mounted to a stem 3. The state of the semiconductor laser element 1 cannot be viewed from the outside of a package 6. However, notches 7 displaying the direction of the joint surface of an active layer are formed to the left and right of the semiconductor laser element 1 in the stem 3, the semiconductor laser element 1 is mounted onto approximately the center on a straight line mutually tying the notches 7, and the straight line represents the direction parallel with the direction of the joint surface of the active layer. Accordingly, an LD module with an optical isolator and polarization plane conservation fiber coupling can easily be conducted by using the semiconductor laser element because a position and the direction of polarization of outgoing beams from the semiconductor laser element are determined.
