英文摘要PURPOSE:To easily execute gain control with high accuracy by monitoring an internal gain by the signal from the optical detecting regions provided on the light input/output side of the gain control region of a laser amplifier and controlling the current quantity of the gain control according to the monitor output thereof. CONSTITUTION:The laser amplifier A consists of clad layers 20, 21 which are different in channel from each other. The upper clad layer 21 forms a 3-electrode structure. Electrodes 22, 24 on the input side and output side are optical detecting regions where the intensity of the light signal propagating in the respective active regions is detected as current. The central region is the gain control region 23. The two signal component amplitudes obtd. from the electrode 22 and the electrode 24 are divided by a divider 25 of a signal processing section. The value obtd. in such a manner and a reference signal REF are compared by a differential amplifier 26 to obtain an error signal. A current source 27 which supplies driving current to the electrode 23 is controlled according to the error signal. The gain control is thus easily executed with the high accuracy.
