英文摘要PURPOSE:To provide a semiconductor light emitting device in which noise due to a return light to a laser is reduced and which can be reduced in size and weight. CONSTITUTION:A layer slab waveguide 4 is optically coupled as a phase shifter to an emitting side of a semiconductor laser 2. The length L of the waveguide 4 is so regulated as to satisfy the relationship of ('TE-'TM)L=pi/2, and an optical waveguide layer is so controlled as to form an angle THETA with an active layer of the laser 2. Accordingly, when a linearly polarized light generated from the laser 2 is incident to an optical waveguide layer of the waveguide 4, the TE mode and the TM mode having different propagation constants are simultaneously excited, elliptically polarized in a generalized manner, and emitted.
