英文摘要PURPOSE:To improve light coupling efficiency between an optical fiber and an optical waveguide layer and take in efficiently signal light by forming the optical waveguide layer for a light incident surface and a clad layer so that they may produce the shape of a convex lens. CONSTITUTION:Clad layers 2a, 2b, and 2c, which are laid out on and around an optical waveguide layer 3 on the end face of light incidence, are adapted to produce the shape of convex lens. This construction deflects the light which is entered the clad layers 3a to 3c around the side of the optical waveguide layer 3 in the direction of the optical waveguide layer 3 so that the light may enter its internal part from the side of the optical waveguide layer 3. Once the light is introduced into the optical waveguide layer 3, the light which is entered from the side at an incidence angle smaller than an angle which satisfies all the reflection conditions, will propagate through the optical waveguide layer 3. As a result, light signals associated with optical amplification will be increased so that the light coupling efficiency between the optical fiber and the optical waveguide layer may be upgraded.
