英文摘要PURPOSE:To enable outgoing light rays to be effectively incident on an optical fiber by a method wherein an optical waveguide is provided with a first and a second tapered end, and a semiconductor laminated body is provided with a fourth and a fifth semiconductor layer as optical window layers. CONSTITUTION:An optical waveguide 20 is provided with tapered ends E1 and E2, and a semiconductor laminated body 10 is provided with semiconductor layers M1 and M2 as optical window layers. By this setup, as a semiconductor layer 22 forming the optical guide 20 has such a structure that its width W is larger than its thickness T, the size of a spot in term of a light propagation mode on the semiconductor laminated body end face F2 which serves as a light emitting face can be made nearly equal in both the widthwise direction and the thicknesswise direction of the semiconductor layer 22 which constitutes the optical waveguide 20. Therefore, in this case, when an outgoing light ray is transmitted through an optical fiber, the outgoing light ray can be effectively incident on the optical fiber concerned.
