英文摘要PURPOSE:To differ the strength of Bragg reflection between first and second subregions of a light-emitting region of a DFB laser so as to cause the DFB laser to produce asymmetrical light outputs from the ends, by differing the length of cyclicly recessed and projected surfaces between the first and second subregions or differing the depths of the recesses and projections therebetween. CONSTITUTION:A waveguide layer 2 is provided with a cyclicly recessed and projected surface 8 (diffraction grating) which is divided into first and second sub-regions having different lengths (different numbers of recesses and projections). For example, the phase shifting point is positioned on the right-hand side from the center so that the first sub- region of the diffraction grating is longer than the second subregion. Accordingly, Bragg reflection is stronger in the first subregion having a longer diffraction grating, while on the contrary the laser output is larger in the second sub-region where the Bragg reflection is weaker. When the laser oscillating power corresponds exactly to the Bragg wavelength, that is, in the case of a primary diffraction grating, the phase shift DFB laser output is produced with a wavelength equal to twice the cycle of the recesses and projections, and the output distribution is determined by the strength of the Bragg reflection in the first and second regions.
