英文摘要PURPOSE:To obtain a light-emitting element which can effectively obtain a large gain in the vertical direction to its semiconductor substrate and has improved coupling properties with an optical fiber, by extending a long active region along the side wall of a through hole formed vertically in the semiconductor substrate and fixedly mounting an optical fiber in a recess provided on the surface of the substrate. CONSTITUTION:A substrate 2 of a compound semiconductor selected from the families III-V, II-VI and IV-VI is provided with a through hole 4, and an impurity such as Zn is diffused to produce an active region 3 An electrode 5 is provided on the rear face of the substrate 2 and an electrode 1 is provided on the side wall 41 of the hole and on a part of the rear face of the substrate 2. A recess 6 is provided on the top face of the substrate 2 above the active region 3 An optical fiber 7 is secured in the recess 6 so that the upper end of the electrode 1 provides an light emission orifice 5 The longer the vertical active region 31 is extended, the more gain can be obtained in the vertical direction. Accordingly, the substrate 2 should have as large a thickness as possible, preferably of at least 20mum. In this manner, it is possible to obtain a light-emitting element which can emit intensive light in the vertical direction and has less coupling loss with the optical fiber.
