英文摘要The inhibitory neuromodulator adenosine is neuroprotective against damage induced by cerebral ischemia. However, the possible therapeutic value of treating acute cerebral ischemia with systemically admin-istered adenosine is dubious, which is due to several cardiovascular side effects such as bradycardia and hypotension. Except for the cardiovascular side effects, adenosine induces cell death by apoptosis. Here, we reviewed the current understanding about adenosine in cerebral ischemia and raise a number of questions as to the possible mechanisms involved.
