| 英文摘要 | PURPOSE:To reduce the number of steps, to improve the yield and to reduce the size and power consumption by providing a semiconductor chip at one end side of a waveguide for amplifying an incident light, and a total-reflecting film on the other end face of a reflection preventing film. CONSTITUTION:Incident light is introduced through an optical fiber 14 to a light amplifier body 12. The incident light is amplified in a waveguide, reflected on a total-reflecting film 12-3, again amplified through a waveguide, and returned to the fiber 14. Thereafter, it is introduced to a beam splitter 15, altered in the propagation passage, and output to an optical fiber 17. Since the light incident to the body 12 in this manner is reciprocated in the waveguide, it becomes twice as large as the optical path length. Since the amplification factor of the light is proportional to the optical path length, the light amplifier 11 has twice as large as that of the conventional semiconductor light amplifier. That is, the size of the semiconductor optical amplifier can be reduced. Further, a current necessary to obtain the same amplification factor may be 1/2 of that of the conventional one to reduce the power consumption. |
