英文摘要External cavity micro laser apparatus comprises at least one multimode micro laser (10) having multiple lasing lobe components. External cavity means embracing the laser (10) has an output section (12) including spatial filter means (22), which may be the input aperture of an optical waveguide (22), for effectively selecting at least one of the transverse lasing lobe components. The cavity output section (12) includes imaging means (16) for imaging at the spatial filter means (22) a far field spatial frequency distribution in the slow axis plane of the emission aperture, at which distribution the lasing lobe components are spatially distinguishable. A cavity return section (14) receives the amplified lasing lobe component after reflection from the laser. Return means (26) in the return section (14) efficiently returns to the laser means (10) at least a portion of the amplified and reflected lasing lobe component.
