英文摘要PURPOSE:To keep a best recording and reproduction state by being adjusted to a just-focused state at a recording operation and a reproduction operation and by being adjusted to a slightly defocused state at an erasure operation and to prevent an imperfect erasure operation by a method wherein an electric current to be injected into a waveguide lens is changed and an image-formation position of a light spot is controlled. CONSTITUTION:A waveguide lens 2 is arranged so as to be adjusted to a semiconductor laser 1; a radiated beam of the semiconductor laser 1 is guided to an active layer 25 of the waveguide lens 2 and is emitted from its end face. A refractive index of a clad layer 26 is lower than that of the active layer 25; thereby, the beam is confined and propagated inside the active layer 25. An electric current I1 is injected into the semiconductor laser 1 by using electrode 1 and electrode 4; light is emitted. When an electric current is injected into the waveguide lens 2 by using electrodes 2, 3, 4, a distribution of the refractive index at the active layer 25 and the clad layer 26 is changed. As a result, a wave front of the propagated light in these layers, i.e., a position of a light-emitting point, can be controlled by injection currents I2, I3. A position P of an equivalent light-emitting point is shifted to a direction of an optical axis according to a magnitude of the injection currents I2, I3; an image-formation position of a light spot which has been narrowed by an objective 6 is changed.
