英文摘要PURPOSE:To lower the coupling loss with external light input/output elements, such as SMF, while suppressing the deterioration of a driving voltage and extinction ratio. CONSTITUTION:The refractive index of the core layer 11 of 1st optical waveguides 10, 11, 12 for input/output is set lower than the refractive index of the core layer 6 of 2nd optical waveguides 5, 6, 10 to be optically coupled to the 1st optical waveguides and the thickness of the core layer 11 is set thicker than the thickness of the core layer 6, by which the light spot size in the core layer 11 is increased to decrease the coupling loss and the equiv. refractive indices of the light propagating in both optical waveguides are nearly equaled to enhance the transfer efficiency of the power between both optical waveguides.
