Prediction of the geomagnetic disturbances in high-latitude region with Weimer model

英文摘要 | Geomagnetic disturbance is an important space weather phenomenon and has great impacts on ground-based technical systems. Accurate prediction of the geomagnetic disturbances can effectively prevent and mitigate major disasters. Based on the Weimer electric potential and magnetic potential model, this paper developed a method to predict the geomagnetic disturbances in high-latitude regions, and the simulation results are compared with observations from the ground-based stations. The geomagnetic disturbances on the ground are mainly induced by the ionospheric current system, which is modeled with the Weimer model. Then the three components of the geomagnetic disturbances are calculated using the Biot-Savart Law. The input parameters of the model are upstream solar wind speed, solar wind number density, interplanetary magnetic field and dipole tilt angle. Comparisons between the simulations and the observations at different latitudes and longitudes indicate that the method proposed in this paper can effectively predict the geomagnetic disturbances during geomagnetic storms. The results in this paper provide important basis for future development of a comprehensive prediction model for the geomagnetic disturbances in high-latitude regions. |
