英文摘要 | Sri Lanka, as an island nation located in the North Indian Ocean (NIO), is vulnerable to tropical cyclones (TCs) generated mostly in the southern part of the Bay of Bengal (BOB). The present thesis aims to investigate the tide-surge interaction (TSI) and to improve the simulations of storm surges, induced by TCs along Sri Lanka coast in the NIO. Prior to the numerical simulations of the storm surges and investigation of the TSI, the variations of TC occurrence and Landfall frequencies were investigated during the 1990-2017 period in the NIO. The NIO observed annual average TC frequency is 4 with a slightly decreasing trend and annual average TC landfall frequency is 2 with a slightly increasing trend from 1990 to 2017. The decadal TC landfall variation is prominent in 1990-1999 (the 90s) period compared with the other two periods of 2000-2009 (the 2000s) and 2010-2017 (the 2010s). Moreover, the TC landfall in the BOB region is more frequent than in the Arabian Sea (ARB) region where the total number of the observed second landfall is only 4 during this period 1990-2017. Therefore, strong storm surges induced by TCs in the BOB region have caused huge damage on property and casualties in the coastal region of the BOB including Sri Lanka, which makes an accurate prediction of the storm surge around Sri Lanka important for a mitigation or reduction of these hazards.Considering the TSI is one of the factors influencing storm surges an attempt was made in this study to investigate the TSI by sensitivity experiments for a selected cyclonic storm case around the Sri Lanka. A three-dimensional Princeton Ocean Model (POM) along with the observed hourly tidal data was used and the Cyclone ‘Nisha’ 2008 case was selected for this purpose. The model reproduced well the tides, surges, total sea levels, and TSI water levels over the study region during this cyclone. The results reveal that the TSI significant along the northwestern coast of the Sri Lanka. Moreover, the maximum magnitude of TSI intensity is associated with the intensity and track of the cyclone. At hour 42 when the TC track was located north off Sri Lanka, the maximum positive TSI reached 0.6m. Accordingly, the maximum negative TSI reached about -0.6m at hour 30 when the TC track was located east off Sri Lanka. The magnitude of the interaction current (UTSI) (0.2 m/s) and the direction of the UTSI were observed to flow out the northwestern coast at this time. Consequently, during the entire TC cycle, strong TSI occurred in the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka and the opposite coast of India, which indicates that the tidal effect cannot be neglected in simulating storm surge in this region. Actually, our sensitivity experiment results show that adding the TSI process into the model can improve the storm surge simulation by up to 20%. |
