英文摘要 | The East Pacific Rise (EPR) is located on south-eastern Pacific basin approximately parallel to the west coast of South America. The north crest of the EPR forms the plate boundary between Pacific and Cocos plates while the south crest forms between Pacific and Nazca plates. The EPR 8o-10oN is an archetype for a fast-spreading mid-ocean ridge (MOR), and has been one of the most comprehensively studied sections of the global MOR system for over four decades. This ridge section has been selected as a multi-disciplinary integrated study site because of its abundance of hydrothermal vents where scientists are investigating the linkages between mantle flow, crustal accretion, volcanic, hydrothermal, and biological processes that result in chemical and physical exchanges of energy and matter between the Earth’s mantle and oceans. This thesis compiles the geological and geophysical signatures (e.g., ridge magmatic system, oceanic crustal architecture, seafloor volcanic eruptions, etc.) of this EPR segment on behalf of the fast-spreading MOR system, highlights systematic features in the scientific findings, assesses up-to-date understandings of the EPR. This thesis also employs the full waveform inversion (FWI) facility to derive a high-fidelity velocity model for seismic imaging of the hydrothermal pathways from fitting the pre-conditioned waveforms of the acquired multi-channel seismic data. |
