Development of Housed Lanthanum Bromide Scintillation Crystal doped with Cerium for GECAM-GRD Detector

英文摘要Gravitational Waves(GW) and associated electromagnetic counterparts have become an international research frontier in Physics and Astronomy. The Gravitational wave bursts high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor(GECAM) is a new emission for monitoring the variations and spectra of the GW associated gamma-ray bursts(GRDs), which supported by the Key Research Program of Frontier Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences. GECAM consists of two small satellites to be launched in 2020,has better comprehensive advantages than the existing monitoring telescopes or the others to be operated at that time, such as 100% all-sky field of view, high sensitivity of about 2×10~(-8) erg/cm~2/s, good positioning accuracy of about 1°(@1×10~(-6) erg/cm~2/s, 10 s), and wide energy range of 6 keV to 5 MeV.Because of higher light output, better energy resolution, more excellent energy response linearity and smaller light output fluctuation with temperature in space than conventional scintillation crystals,cerium-doped lanthanum bromide(LaBr_3:Ce) scintillation crystal is selected as GRD detection materials in despite of the fact it has very heavy hygroscopicity. And LaBr_3:Ce boules are machined into the cylinders with a diameter of 76 mm and a thickness of 15 mm and their surfaces are polished optically, then the cylindrical crystals are encapsulated in an Al-alloy house with a gamma ray incidence window and a scintillation light exit window at two ends. 0.22 mm-thick Be sheet is used as ray windows, and 5 mm-thick polished quartz glass as optical windows, respectively. So it is very difficult to make the housed LaBr_3:Ce crystals for GECAM-GRD detectors.By optimizing encapsulation structure, preparation process, and the packaging materials including reflective material, optical coupling agent, sealant adhesive, Be sheet and quartz glass, Beijing Glass Research Institute(BGRI) has successfully prepared high-quality housed LaBr_3:Ce crystals. In this paper, the scintillation properties of the housed crystals and their performances related to random vibration, impact,temperature-humidity change and gamma irradiation are introduced.
