Catalytic reduction of aqueous bromate by a non-noble metal catalyst of CoS2 hollow spheres in drinking water at room temperature

英文摘要 | Bromate is a toxic disinfection by-product of drinking water due to its potential carcinogenicity in human and its content is strictly regulated in drinking water all around the world. Among various techniques for the elimination of bromate from drinking water, the catalytic hydrogenation is now believed as an efficient and clean process. However, catalysts developed for the catalytic hydrogenation of bromate were mostly limited to noble metal-based catalysts, while their high cost and scarcity seriously impede their practical applications. In this work, a non-noble metal catalyst of CoS2 hollow spheres were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal process during which the oil droplets of CS2 served as both the sulfur source and the soft template for the creation of hollow sphere structure. It was found for the first time that CoS2 hollow spheres could successfully reduce aqueous bromate to nontoxic bromide with the reducing agent of H-2 at room temperature as a noble-metal substitute with comparable performance and stability to Pd-based catalysts. A 100% conversion ratio was observed after 20 min, 30 min, and 1 h treatments for initial bromate concentrations of 0.0078 mM (1 ppm), 0.078 mM (10 ppm) and 0.39 mM (50 ppm), respectively, with the loading of CoS2 hollow spheres of 0.2 g.L-1 and the supply of H-2 flow of 100 cm(3)/min, and the corresponding bromate reduction rates were 0.117, 0.78 and 1.95 mmolBromate.h(-1).gcat(-1), respectively. Furthermore, CoS2 hollow spheres demonstrated a superior tolerance to the commonly found oxyanion of HCO3- in drinking water for catalytic bromate reduction than that of Pd based catalysts. |
