Physical Modeling of Pore Pressure Responses in a Fine-Sand Seabed Under Combined Waves and Current

In natural coastal environments, progressive waves are usually coexisting with a current. The wave-induced pore pressure response in a non-cohesive seabed could be remarkably different if a current is imposed onto the progressive waves. Nevertheless, the existing experimental results on the pore pressure response under combined waves and current are still scarce. In this study, the pore pressure responses induced by combined wave-current in a fine-sand seabed were physically modeled with a large flume, which can concurrently generate periodic waves and a following or opposing current. The experimental results indicate that for the short-period waves, a following-current leads to an increase of the pore-pressure amplitude within the sand-bed, while an opposing-current has a contrary effect. Nevertheless, for the long-period waves, a following-current may decrease the pore pressure amplitude. Different from previous studies, the present observations provide an insight into the effects of combined wave-current on the pore-pressure responses. Such effects imply that superimposing a current onto progressive waves can either increase or decrease the pore-pressure amplitude in the sand-bed. Comparisons are made between the present experimental results with the analytical solutions, indicating they are in good agreement.
