Tunable imidazolium ionic liquids as efficient catalysts for conversion of urea into cyclic carbonates

英文摘要 | Synthesis of cyclic carbonates from cheap and reusable urea is of great importance, but it is still an immense challenge to obtain highly efficient catalysts using relatively less metal-containing catalysts for this route due to conventional metal salt catalysts with established structure. Herein, a series of eco-friendly ionic liquids (ILs) with different cationic structures were adopted as efficient catalysts for the reaction of urea alcoholysis. By regulating the cation chain lengths, different lewis acid centers of imidazolium-based ILs with chain lengths from C-2 to C-16 were constructed. The IL with a moderate side chain (OmimCl/ZnCl2) exhibited better catalytic performance and the yield of ethylene carbonate (EC) could reach 96% percent with less metal-containing catalyst at lower diols/urea molar ratio conditions. Through exploring the structure-activity relationships of cationic structure and anionic speciation, it was illustrated that the inductive effect of cation in ILs had important influences on the synthesis of [Zn2Cl5]-. Additionally, the appearance of the [Zn2Cl5]-, which has been proved with pyridine spectroscopic could strengthen the lewis acidity of ILs to obtain high catalytic activity, this could avoid excessive metal-containing in ILs. Based on the experimental results and DFT calculations, an IL anion cation synergistic catalytic mechanism has been proposed. Thus, the use of ILs opens up a new green avenue and provides a preliminary basis of CO2 utilization. |
