Due to the increasing of traffic and the introduction of new technologies, the way to perform tasks by modern traffic police have been changed. However, few studies have systematically analyzed the tasks of modern traffic police, a major force in enhancing the efficiency and safety of the transportation network. Based on Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA), this study investigated the major tasks of front-line traffic policemen in China with a focus on how new technology are implemented. Overall, the results suggested that 135 Fast response to incidents, Drunk driving inspection, Routine patrol and road guidance, serious accident disposal, and AVI checkpoint interception are the key tasks, while body-worn cameras, police terminals and hand-held radios are the main intelligent equipment for policing. This HTA provided insight into key traffic police work-flows and laid the foundation for improving the traffic policemen performance, as well as producing and developing more effective smart equipment for police use.
