The present study investigated how feedback in different modalities affects window navigation performance on touchscreen for users of different age. Thirty-two younger and 32 older users moved a window towards one of four or one of eight target areas with no feedback, visual, tactile, or visual-tactile feedback. In general, we observed higher accuracy and shorter task completion time when provided with feedbacks with visual information (visual or visual-tactile feedback) than tactile feedback alone. Visual-tactile feedback did not further improve accuracy or shorten task completion time compared to visual feedback. We nevertheless observed visual-tactile feedback elicited better user experience. In relation to aging, visual and visual-tactile feedbacks helped older users complete the task as accurate as younger users when the window size was four. We concluded that visual feedback was more efficient to guide the navigation task. This work provides insights regarding feedback modality in mobile devices for users of different ages.
